Is it bad that I think after a long day of Linux sysadmin projects, I feel that I need to ‘unwind’ by cutting the excess slack off of my primary Internet Ethernet cable and re-crimp a new RJ-45 end onto it (with sleeves! Woo!), so it looks nice and tidy going from my firewall to my cable modem?

  1. How do you have a cable modem?
And why? Are you aware at&t has ADSL2 in your area??

There is a fairly well equipped cable Internet/TV/Phone company up here that starts with an ‘M’. They offer very good speeds at very decent prices… The only thing I’d pay AT&T for these days is to remove their ugly copper lasso hanging to the side of my house from the utility pole.

‘M’ hmm do i feel the need to now do a google search for Internet/TV/Phone services that start with ‘M’ , no , do you know why?? Becuase DSL has always been better then cable as far as stability. Tho not as fast but I would take the steady ping low latency over some possible speed. What would be great is if Sonic could bring their fiber up and we could all have 100/100 with the free static IP.

UNTIL that happens Im gonna go though that ugly lasso to the side of your house. at my.. http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/1345782923

That’s a very ‘old school’ way of thinking about cable Internet service. And I guess you don’t care much about how AT&T does business, but room 614A gives me the fucking creeps.

For me, it’s 18.10Mb/s down, 5.81Mb/s up with my service – and that’s looping through a VPN on the East coast. I’ll let you know if I ever disconnect from the VPN how much faster it is. I really don’t see a big deal regarding latency either, I usually have 5+ SSH sessions going at once. I pay $39/month for my service.

Hmm now Room614A may be something to look into.
I like the 5.81 up but let me axe you.. Do they block incoming ports on you ie: 23, 80, 8080? This was a big problem for me last time I had signed up with a cable giant. Also the customer service was laughable. Not much off AT&T’s awesome hold time/music and reps that could care less about you or your problems.
